llms.txt: De neie Standard fir Är Websäit "AI-ready" ze maachen

The Web is changing its face. While the last thirty years have been dedicated to optimization for traditional search engines (SEO), we are entering the era of GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). In this context, a new file is appearing at the root of servers: llms.txt.

Proposed in September 2024 by Jeremy Howard (Answer.AI), this standard aims to simplify the way language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT or Claude consume information from your site.

What is the file llms.txt?

The llms.txt is to LLM what robots.txt is to traditional search engines. It is a Markdown file located at the root of your domain (e.g., your-site.com/llms.txt).

Its purpose is not to restrict access, but to provide a semantic "treasure map." It allows AI agents to bypass the "noise" of HTML pages (menus, cookie banners, scripts) to access the essence of your content directly.

Why is it crucial for your visibility?

The major challenge of AI is the context window (the amount of information a model can process at once). A classic HTML site wastes thousands of "tokens" on unnecessary elements.

Key benefits:

  1. Token efficiency: You focus the AI's attention on the content, thereby reducing computational costs and the risk of errors.
  2. Reduction of hallucinations: By guiding the AI towards clear and structured sources, you increase the chances of obtaining accurate and faithful responses.
  3. Identity control: You determine which pages are a priority to define your expertise or services.

Technical structure of the file

The format is intentionally minimalist to be easily "parsable" by machines:

  • H1 (Title): The name of your site or project.
  • Blockquote: A concise summary that serves as a framework for interpretation for AI.
  • H2 (Sections): Thematic groupings (Documentation, Services, Blog).
  • Link lists: Formatted as follows: (URL): Short description.

The variant llms-full.txt

For large documentation, it is recommended to create a file llms-full.txt. This document concatenates all of your key texts into a single Markdown file, allowing coding agents (like Cursor) to ingest your entire knowledge base in a single request.

Adoption and SEO Impact (GEO)

Although Google does not yet use it as an official ranking factor, companies like Anthropic, Stripe, and Cloudflare have already adopted it.

Studies show that the presence of this file accelerates indexing by generative engines. In some cases, Google's AI has started using the llms.txt as the primary source of authority for brand-related queries, citing it above standard HTML pages.

Conclusion: A minimal investment, a maximal potential

Setting up a llms.txt file takes less than an hour but prepares your site for the decades to come. It's a strong signal sent to AI agents: your content is structured, reliable, and ready to be cited in the generative responses that now dominate the Web.
